What makes you think you have the right to call yourself a dancer?

Skill level? Training? Knowledge? Image? Social affiliations? Resume? Seniority?

Just curious to hear different opinions...

When we were looking for dancers, I'd post that we weren't interested in background, just skill. Yet people insisted on telling us who they trained with, sent in-depth resumes, pictures in hip hop "poses". All they had to do was send videos or audition in person lol. Its nothing about trying to impress the next person or doing it because they need to get ahead in life. A true dancer is some one that only needs a good Dj and a nice floor and a great vibe.

I think in terms of being a professional dancer sure, you should take classes, learn your history, practice practice practice, know how to book yourself and of course make a living off your craft (if you chose too).

But regardless I think its good to be an all around dancer. Dancers should want to keep learning and feeding their souls with information and flava! They should want to take classes and want to freestlye and want to be able to say I know my sh** :); ▶ Reply to This

I'm not trained, I dont have all the right moves but I love to dance and go to classes no matter if I'm the worst person in the room. therefore, I feel that makes me just as much a dancer as anybody else... many will disagree. At the same time though, you can work professionally and do your thing but if it's not in your heart are you really a dancer?

Permalink Reply by Marta on August 5, 2009 at 6:55pm: well, this is difficult man, obviously, I think anyone who moves from within his soul and feels the beat and the groove and just takes that out through his body could call himself a dancer, still, when you wanna talk about proffessional dancing, it is true that you must take classes and improve your skills and practice a lot and "perfectionate" your moves, styles... anyway, if you don't have it in your heart, you can practice all you want and be as perfect as the best in your execution of the moves, but that's not dancing at all 'cos it will not express and without that, there's no dance, there's no emotion; ▶ Reply to This
